The Kodak ESP 9250 All-in-One Printer ($249.99 list) is the new top dog in Kodak's multifunction printer (MFP) line, replacing the now discontinued ESP 9 ($299.99 direct, 3.5 stars). It has an abundance of features that make it suitable for either a home or home office, or do double duty between the two roles. Surprisingly good text quality as well as fax capabilities and an automatic duplexer emphasize the home-office side, while photocentric features make it a good fit on the home front.
The ESP 9250 prints, scans, copies, and faxes; it also works as a standalone fax machine and copier. (The ESP 7520 ($199 direct, 3 stars), which I recently tested, lacks fax capabilities.) It has the ability to print from or scan to USB keys and memory cards and print from PictBridge cameras as well.

One all-in-one feature proved problematic. You should be able to scan to an e-mail message from the printer's front panel by choosing what computer you want to scan to, choosing 'application' as your destination, initiating the scan, and then selecting the option to scan to your default e-mail client. As was the case with the ESP 7250, I was unable to get the unit to scan to an Outlook 2003 message, although Kodak says that it should be compatible. In both cases, a Kodak technician was unable to resolve the problem.

Kodak
The ESP 9250 is a handsome, coffee-brown MFP that measures 17 by 18 by 9 inches (HWD) and weighs 19.8 pounds. The tilt-up front panel contains a 2.4-inch LCD screen, an alphanumeric control button, and an array of physical control buttons. The 100-sheet paper tray limits its business use to light duty in a home-office environment, unless you don't mind frequently changing paper, though a 40-page tray for up to 5-by-7 photos makes up for it. A built-in automatic duplexer is a plus. It has a 30-page automatic document feeder (ADF) for use with the scanner and copier.
Setup was routine, with no notable issues. We tested the 9250 over an Ethernet connection with a PC running 32-bit Windows Vista. (Kodak says that it comes with drivers for both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows Vista and Windows 7, Win XP, and Mac OS X 10.4.8 and above.) It also has built-in 80211.n WiFi, as well as USB connectivity to a computer. It has slots for memory cards in most standard formats and a slot that can be used with either a USB key or a PictBridge-enabled camera.
Speed
Dlink dbt-120 driver for mac. The 9250 took 15 minutes 16 seconds to complete our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing). This nearly matched the 7250's 15:09, though it lagged the Editors' Choice Canon Pixma MG8120 Wireless Photo All-In-One Printer ($299 direct, 4 stars), which finished in 11:43, and the Epson Artisan 835 ($299.99 direct, 4 stars), which posted a lightning-fast 7:57, in line with other recent Epson MFPs. Though a little poky, the 9250 is still well within the acceptable range for speed, as some MFPs take more than 20 minutes to finish our test.

The 9250 averaged 58 seconds to print a 4-by-6 photo and 1 minute 49 seconds to print an 8-by-10, putting it among the fastest inkjet MFPs in its price range, with scores similar to the Artisan 835 (0:57 and 2:04), the MG8120 (0:57 and 1:45), and the Kodak 7250 (1:06 and 1:48).
Quality
For photos, quality is more important than speed. The 9250's's photo quality, though decent, was slightly below par for an inkjet MFP. Though most could pass as drugstore quality, a couple of prints were on the pale side or showed poor contrast, and others showed posterization (sudden shifts of color where they should have been gradual).

The 9250's photos proved scratch resistant not too water resistant. The ink ran when they were exposed to water soon after printing; even prints allowed to dry for a day showed some discoloration after drops of water were dripped on them. The photos should be long-lived, however, with Kodak claiming an expected lifetime of greater than 100 years for photos left in the open and in excess of 120 years for print framed under glass or in dark storage such as an album.
The 9250's text quality was very good, especially for an inkjet. The majority of our test fonts were both well formed and easily readable at 6 points, with nearly half easily readable at 5 points. None of the fonts except one highly stylized font with thick strokes needed more than 10 points to be both well formed and easily readable, and even that one passed both thresholds at 12 points. The text should be suitable for any business need except for those requiring extremely small fonts.
Graphics, on the other end, were on the low end of the narrow quality range in which nearly all inkjet MFPs fall. Several graphics showed poor color fidelity and were on the pale side. In a couple of cases, very thin lines showed breaks. A few other images showed traces of banding, faint patterns of straight lines or streaks; in one case, it was to the point where it was distracting. The graphics were good enough for general business use, but whether you'd want to use the 9250 for PowerPoint handouts, say, depends on how picky you are and who you intend to give them to.
One plus is Kodak's low claimed cost per page, just 3 cents per black-and-white page and 8 cents per color page.
Matshita uj272 firmware. Although the Kodak ESP 9250 All-in-One's 100-sheet main paper tray limits its business use to light-duty home offices, its fax, connectivity, text quality, and photo features make it a good fit for either micro offices or households, or both. It lacks the photo quality of MFPs such as the Canon Pixma MG8120 and the speed of the Epson Artisan 835 (each cost $50 more than the 9250), but it's a step up from the ESP 7250 and brings a very well-rounded feature set to the table.
